Located on 5th Street, Tap Tap may seem out of the way for most people as it is far from most hotels and most notably the beach. However, one would be remiss to not go and enjoy some of the best Haitian food available ln Miami Beach. Serving such dishes such as fried conch and many variations of chicken, Tap Tap aims to bring a slice of the island nation to your plate.
The Tap Tap experience begins as soon as one enters the door as the walls are covered with frescos depicting the rural life on Haiti in style of its folk paintings. They create a very different atmosphere from most restaurants for an overall rustic and rural feel to the restaurant. Even the bathrooms are adorned with these paintings as no wall is left plain and barren. However, the restaurants is quite cavernous making it hard to find the bathroom and just getting back to your own table can be a journey if one sits in one of the niche rooms. The A/C also works overtime during the summer so it is advised to wear warm clothing.
For the actual food, the menu is largely populated with meat dishes like chicken, pork beef and the more exotic like goat and conch. All menu entries are is written in creole to lend that extra bit of authenticity which is the overall goal of Tap Tap’s atmosphere. Every main dish comes with plantains and rice with beans in addition to a very generous main dish so no one should leave hungry. However on of the best items is not food but rather the restaurants offerings of tropical cocktails. Tap Tap’s mojito is true to its reputation and it truly is top-notch. That fresh-squeezed lime juice really packs a special punch into the beverage. In addition, the tropical rum is also quite popular and worthy of a taste test.
Overall Tap Tap succeeds in bringing a piece of Haiti to Miami Beach not just in the art and décor but also its menu of more exotic dishes with signature Caribbean twist and spice. Tap Tap is well worth the trip down to eastern 5th Street.
